Volunteer Inquiry
Join our Volunteer Team
Genesee Fire Rescue consists of approximately 35 dedicated volunteers.
Most of the members have full time jobs in addition to their volunteer activities with the fire department. It is not just fun; it is a calling to serve the GFPD community.
Requirements
As members of the department, volunteers are required to attend a minimum of 36 hours of training per year, respond to a minimum of 12% of all calls or average 36 shift hours per month, and be at the ready to assist in an emergency, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
In order to be a part of this department, members participate in a 4-month academy, at the end of which they are state certified as Fire Fighter I with Hazardous Materials Operations certification. In addition, during this academy they complete the requirements to earn certification as Wildland Firefighter Type 2. Approximately 50% of the members pursue advanced medical training at the First Responder, Emergency Medical Technician, or Paramedic level so that we may provide initial emergency medical services and assist the Highland Rescue Team Ambulance District.
Many GFR members are trained in technical rescue, high angle rescue, incident command, advanced wildfire operations, just to name a few. Our volunteers take their commitment to the GFPD community seriously; they are well trained and feel privileged to serve.
